Filmmaking event returns Aug. 27 with four premieres from Southeast creators reclaiming their narratives and shaping the future of independent film
ATLANTA (August 18, 2025) – On Set ATL, the fastest-growing independent film screening and creative networking showcase in Atlanta, will host its next major event, The Table Is Ours, on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Ambient Plus Studio in Atlanta. The evening is set to be a bold and intentional celebration of four of the Southeast’s most visionary emerging filmmakers who are all returning alumni from previous On Set ATL events poised to premiere their powerful new works, making the event a true creative homecoming.
The Table Is Ours is more than an event title – it’s a declaration. The featured short films were written, directed, and produced by artists who are reclaiming the frame, building the space, and shaping the next chapter in Southern independent film to tell their deeply meaningful stories on their own terms.
The four premieres include:
8 Count – Directed by Rai’Vaun
A heartfelt drama focused on a father and son who bond through dance as they navigate grief and healing. Rai’Vaun, an award-winning director and choreographer who has worked with icons like Missy Elliot and 2 Chains, is known for bridging street culture, emotion, and performance with cinematic excellence.
Hurry Up & Wait – Executive Produced and Written by Lead Actress Jamila C. Gray
A young woman’s chaotic morning spirals in a comedic, relatable fashion that serves as a reminder that life doesn’t always follow your schedule, no matter how fast you move. Jamila C. Gray, star of Paramount’s On the Come Up, is a rising voice in film and television dedicated to creating authentic spaces for underrepresented creatives.
Weirdo – Directed by Creed Smith
A layered exploration of identity, perception, and the power of owning your narrative. Seasoned director and producer Creed Smith is celebrated for his high-quality visuals, authentic storytelling, and innovative film execution.
Breathe – Directed by Mya-Breyana Morton
A heartfelt, coming-of-age dramedy about anxiety, self-doubt, and taking risks that could change everything. Mya-Breyana Morton, a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and Emmy-nominated filmmaker, takes pride in championing inclusion and mentorship in film.
“The visionaries behind these projects have uniquely pushed boundaries in the independent film space and serve as a testament to the magic that happens when artists stop waiting for a seat at the table and start building their own,” said Jhaneal Hector, co-founder of On Set ATL. “Rooted in truth and crafted with heart, each short exemplifies the strength of storytelling and the power of owning your narrative.”
Since its founding in 2022, On Set ATL has quickly become a hailed safe space for Southern filmmakers, creatives, and industry leaders to spark meaningful conversations and develop pathways for independent work to thrive. The Table Is Ours marks the organization’s 18th event, further solidifying its mission to amplify voices often underrepresented in mainstream film while building a self-sustaining creative ecosystem in Atlanta.
“It’s important to connect within the industry and acknowledge the courage it takes to create the opportunities you want but don’t often see,” said Martina Lindo, co-founder of On Set ATL. “We’re here to help filmmakers show their work and get the support necessary to propel their project in a way that reflects their vision.”
